The IFs system has collected information on governance quality from “Governance Matters VII: Governance Indicators for 1996–2007”, a World Bank Policy Research Working Paper published in 2008'', ''authored by D. Kaufmann A. Kraay, and M. Mastruzzi.

These indicators are estimated based on various individual variables measuring perceptions of governance. The governance indicators dataset collected information from 25 separate data sources constructed by 18 different organizations. The governance indicator dataset was initiated in 1998 and grouped in as six dimension of governance: Voice and Accountability, Political Stability and Absence of Violence, Government Effectiveness, Regulatory Quality, Rule of Law, Control of Corruption.

Human Development Reports (HDRs) have been released most years since 1990 and have explored different themes through the human development approach. They have had an extensive influence on development debate worldwide. The reports, produced by the Human Development Report Office for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is ensured of editorial independence by the United Nation’s General Assembly. Indeed they are seen as reports to UNDP, not of UNDP. This allows each report greater freedom to explore ideas and constructively challenge policies. The reports have also inspired national and regional analyses which, by their nature, usually address issues that are more country – or regionally - specific.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) provides data on the Global Burdens of Disease that can be accessed here [http://ghdx.healthdata.org/gbd-results-tool http://ghdx.healthdata.org/gbd-results-tool]. IHME provides data on multiple metrics that we pull into IFs, including deaths, DALYs, incidence, prevelance, violence and forecasts for each. The latest IFs data update for this series was in February 2024, covering 188 economies over the years 1990-2019.

*For the BP energy data, it is fairly straight forward. I pulled it all from the BP website [https://www.energyinst.org/statistical-review/resources-and-data-downloads Resources and data downloads | Statistical Review of World Energy (energyinst.org)]
*I used all of the conversions that are listed in the DataDict and each one works well. When preparing the data, please compare the units from the original source and the units in the DataDict. Use the BBOE_UnitConversions.xlsx to transform the data to unified units (BBOE) in IFs. The latest update date for the BBOE_UnitConversion was 2024/02/12.
**For example, the unit from BP for oil production is in MTOE (Million tonnes of oil equivalent). We need to convert that to BBOE (Billion Barrels of Oil Equivalent), which is why we multiply by those numbers in the Formula.

The index measures the degree of economic freedom present in five major areas: [1] Size of Government; [2] Legal System and Security of Property Rights; [3] Sound Money; [4] Freedom to Trade Internationally; [5] Regulation. Comprehensive data are available only with a two-year lag, so the index itself has a two-year lag.

Within the five major areas, there are 26 components in the index. Many of those components are themselves made up of several sub-components. In total, the index comprises 44 distinct variables. All variables come from third party sources, such as the International Country Risk Guide, the Global Competitiveness Report, and the World Bank’s Doing Business project, so that the subjective judgments of the authors do not influence the index. This also creates transparency and allows researchers to replicate the index. The index for past years is updated with each new edition to take account of revisions in the underlying data.

== Summary ==
The Freedom in the World report is composed of numerical ratings and supporting descriptive texts for 195 countries and 15 territories. External analysts assess 210 countries and territories, using a combination of on-the-ground research, consultations with local contacts, and information from news articles, nongovernmental organizations, governments, and a variety of other sources. Expert advisers and regional specialists then vet the analysts’ conclusions. The final product represents the consensus of the analysts, advisers, and Freedom House staff.

For each country and territory, Freedom in the World analyzes the electoral process, political pluralism and participation, the functioning of the government, freedom of expression and of belief, associational and organizational rights, the rule of law, and personal autonomy and individual rights.
