They distinguish between five high-level principles of democracy: electoral, liberal, participatory, deliberative, and egalitarian, and collect data to measure these principles.

The data team uses V-Dem for data for series including, but not limited to, SeriesCivilLibertiesindexVDEM, SeriesCivilSocietyParticipationIndexVDEM, SeriesCleanElectionsIndexVDEM, and SeriesFreedomofExpressionIndexVDEM.
