There are 10 series pulled from the "2008 Report on the global AIDS epidemic, UNAIDS/WHO, July 2008". Several of these are used in the preprocessor but haven't been updated since 2008. It looks like these series have been pulled since then, but since the series name changed, they are not being read into the preprocessor. Updating the 2008 series should take care of that problem without changing the code.

There are also 57 series pulled more recently from UNAIDS (2013), but none of these are used in the preprocessor.

Instructions on data import - Old Notes

People living with HIV (all ages) and AIDS-related deaths (all ages)

The data can be found under the “Data Sheet” tab, “national” option from http://aidsinfo.unaids.org/ and contains data from 1990 to 2017.

Operations carried out:

The data source has Excel and CSV files. The data in the CSV files was used, and it contains medium data points as well as the “lower”, and “upper” values on the same Excel sheet for the years 1990 to 2017. There are also less than signs < next to the numbers, as they are ranges, and the blank cells have three dots.

Using the find and replace option on excel to make sure all symbols were deleted, including the dots for nulls, and the column titles renamed to match the series names as below. The country names were then concorded using the IFs country names.

The data were then separated into 3 sheets that contained Medium, Low, and High estimates on separate sheets and was ready for the final Import to IFs. The same applied for the first series, “People Living with HIV (All ages)” – Number of people living with HIV subsection, under People living with HIV, and the second series, “AIDS-related deaths (All ages)” – Number of AIDS-related deaths subsection, under AIDS-related deaths.

People living with HIV (all ages):

HealthUNAIDSTotalHIVHighEst

HealthUNAIDSTotalHIVMidEst

HealthUNAIDSTotalHIVLowEst

AIDS-related deaths (all ages)

HealthUNAIDSDeathsHighEst

HealthUNAIDSDeathsLowEst

HealthUNAIDSDeathsMidEst

For treatment pull from People living with HIV receiving ART (%).

This series is an update of the 2015 variant of this series and replaces the current series noted above.

OECD countries (all series): Data for OECD countries was missing from the data sources. The update was blended with data points from the 2013 variant of the series.

For the AIDS related -deaths variables, there was no data for key countries such as China, Finland, Russia, Iceland, North Korea, South Korea, Spain, Sweden Switzerland, Turkey, UAE, UK. and US (until 2007).

For People Living with HIV, counties missing data include: Belgium, Canada, China, Croatia, North Korea, South Korea, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, UAE, UK, US (until 2007).

NOTE: "UNAIDS changes their data because they incorporate new surveillance and program data into their models each year"

For the 2024 update, we pulled 6 tables.

To Pull the Data

  1. Go to this site: https://aidsinfo.unaids.org/ and click on Epidemic and Responses
  2. Then in the indicator search bar, search up the indicators you need.
  3. The data sheets you will need are under "Data Sheet." You can either export a CSV or XLS file. For this update, CSV files were used.
    UNAIDS.png
  4. Below is the file after downloading it:
    Excel File for UNAIDS.png
  5. Each file will have four types of data for the years: 1990 1990_lower 1990_upper 1990_Footnote. Delete the foot note years columns. The year in the numerical format (1990) is the mid range estimate. The year_upper is the high estimate number and the year_lower is the low estimate number. This is how we will organize the data for the respective series.
  6. It is imperative that all symbols are removed from the file (this includes <, > signs, ... that acts as NULLs,) so that the data can import properly.
  7. To pull the following tables:
    1. SeriesHealthUNAIDSTotalHIVHighEst
    2. HealthUNAIDSTotalHIVMidEst
    3. HealthUNAIDSTotalHIVLowEst
      1. Search "People living with HIV - All ages" in the bar.
      2. For these tables, the unit is Millions. Divide the data in the excel by /1,000,000 to get the correct unit.
  8. To pull the following tables:
    1. HealthUNAIDSDeathsLowEst
    2. HealthUNAIDSDeathsHighEst
      1. Search "AIDS-related deaths - All ages" in the bar.
      2. For these tables, the unit is Millions. Divide the data in the excel by /1,000,000 to get the correct unit.
  9. To pull the following table:
    1. HealthUNAIDSARTCoverMidEst
      1. Search "People living with HIV receiving ART (%)" in the bar.
      2. For these tables, the unit is percent in decimal form. Divide the data in the excel by /100 to get the correct unit.

NOTES:

  1. Blending will be imperative as some of the data from countries was not included in the latest update of their data.
  2. "UNAIDS changes their data because they incorporate new surveillance and program data into their models each year"
