FAOSTAT Food Balance Sheet

Summary

FAOSTAT provides annual statistics of food supply by country. FAOSTAT data can be found herehttp://www.fao.org/faostat/en/#data. The latest data has been pulled from the report updated on April, 2025 which covers 186 economies from year 1961 to year 2022.

Tables In IFs

Note: For "OtherUtl" series, the old “other utilizations” variable has been split into two new ones: “Tourist” food allocation (for now used in a limited number of countries where tourism has a very significant impact on food supply) and “Industrial non-food uses” (which should cover allocations to the textile, pharmaceutical, etc. industries). Thus, there are 2 Element Codes.

Data Pulling Instructions

The FAOSTAT FBS series are blended from two datasets: The historical data goes from 1961 to 2009 while the preliminary data goes from 2010 to 2021. Both datasets are from the FAOSTAT website.

  1. The data can be accessed on the FAOSTAT website. Historical data series are available here <http://www.fao.org/faostat/en/#data/FBSH> and preliminary data series are available here <http://www.fao.org/faostat/en/#data/FBS>.
  2. Download 'All Data' under Bulk Downloads.
  3. Apply Python script.
  4. There are 160 series in Total. The series are sorted by category in the tables above.
    • 130 standard series,

    • 13 series starting with "AGCrop",
    • 13 series starting with "AGMeat",
    • 2 series starting with "AgFruVeg",
    • 2 series starting with "AgPulses".
  5. The following states are included in FAOSTAT countries, but we do not have them in IFs Countries. You will need to copy and paste the data from the below dissolved states into their new states (The general rule about merging data between current states and their former dissolved states is whichever state that inherited the capital city has the right to claim data from its former dissolved state):
    • China, mainland --> China
    • Czechoslovakia --> Czech Republic
    • Ethiopia PDR --> Ethiopia
    • USSR --> Russian Federation
    • Yugoslav SFR --> Serbia
    • Serbia and Montenegro --> Serbia
    • Sudan (former) --> Sudan
  6. When take the sum of items under crops/fruveg group, be aware that sum of null is null instead of 0.
  7. Remember to follow the formulas of the DataDict!
