The World Telecommunication Indicators Database is one of the various data sources that have been used in IFs system for analyzing the size of the Information Communications Technology (ICT) sector in economies. The World Telecommunication Indicators Database, launched by ITU, contains time series data for the years 1960, 1965, 1970 and annually from 1975-2007 for around 80 sets of telecommunication statistics and is categorized into telephone network size and dimension, mobile services, quality of service, traffic, staff, tariffs, revenue and investment. Selected demographic, macroeconomic, broadcasting and information technology statistics are also included. The database encompasses data for over 200 economies.&nbsp; It can be purchased either in CD-ROM or in printed version. ITU claims that the database is updated and revised approximately every three months. The following series are used in the pre-processor. I managed to get data for 3 series which was the assigned task. The dates listed are the dates of the last update. The site has more data which seems to require purchasing in order to conduct a batch pull.
There are a total of 105 series with that begin&nbsp;with ICT; the majority of the series come from ITU (104), and World Bank (1). The series were updated in the first quarter of 2015 or earlier and need updating. I have attached an ITU.xlsx file.

International Telecommunications Union (ITU): World Telecommunication Indicators Database (12th edition 2008)

The World Telecommunication Indicators Database is one of the various data sources that have been used in IFs system for analyzing the size of the Information Communications Technology (ICT) sector in economies. The World Telecommunication Indicators Database, launched by ITU, contains time series data for the years 1960, 1965, 1970 and annually from 1975-2007 for around 80 sets of telecommunication statistics and is categorized into telephone network size and dimension, mobile services, quality of service, traffic, staff, tariffs, revenue and investment. Selected demographic, macroeconomic, broadcasting and information technology statistics are also included. The database encompasses data for over 200 economies.  It can be purchased either in CD-ROM or in printed version. The ITU database is updated and revised approximately every three months. Detailed information about World Telecommunication Indicators is available at http://www.itu.int/ITU-D/ict/publications/world/world.html


There are a total of 105 series with that begin with ICT; the majority of the series come from ITU (104), and World Bank (1). The series were updated in the first quarter of 2015 or earlier and need updating. I have attached an ITU.xlsx file.

Instructions on pulling ITU data

The following series were updated up to 2014:

ICTTelephoneCellSubscribersPer100 
ICTBroadbandSubscribersPer100ITU 

Step 1: Go to http://www.itu.int/en/ITU-D/Statistics/Pages/stat/default.aspx and find five links under the "aggregate data " header titled "Time Series By Country(2015)".  Three links were relevant for the pre-processor update(fixed-telephone subscriptions, mobile-cellular subscriptions, and fixed broadband subscriptions).

Step 2: Click on the three links and download the fixed-telephone subscriptions, mobile-cellular subscriptions, and fixed broadband subscriptions excel data sheets.

Step 3: Sort the data into a format that can be imported into IFs by adding the ITU country concordance.

Issues to note

Kosovo and Korea, Democratic Republic are not covered in the ICTBroadbandSubscribersPer100ITU series. 

Kosovo is not covered in the three series.

Inconsistency: There have been variations in the appearance of zeros and nulls for SeriesICTBroadbandSubscribersPer100ITU. The current dataset has nulls, leading to the removal of zeros in the current update for SeriesICTBroadbandSubscribersPer100ITU.
