United Nations Statistics Division: UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) Education Database

The United Nations Statistics Division, UIS Education database is the most comprehensive education databse in the world, containing data from more than 200 countries and territories.  The UIS has the mandate to monitor progress towards Education for All and education-related Millennium Development Goals. The statistics, which are updated twice a year, are used by diverse partners, including governments, donor agencies and other UN organizations. In particular, the UIS is the primary education data source for the Education for All Global Monitoring Report, the World Development Indicators and the Human Development Report Data is collected through the UIS annual education survey, which covers all education levels and a range of issues such as enrolment rate, gender parity, teachers, and financing. The IFs system uses data on school enrollment, educational expenditures, literacy rates.

Instructions for pulling and importing data on enrollment in vocational programmes:

The pre-processor series in IFs relating to enrollment in vocational programmes are:

  1. EdSecUpperVoc%AllMale
  2. EdSecUpperVoc%AllFemale
  3. EdSecUpperVoc%AllTotal
  4. EdSecLowerVoc%AllMale
  5. EdSecLowerVoc%Allfemale
  6. EdSecLowerVoc%AllTotal

Pulling Data:

Data for these series was obtained from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (http://data.uis.unesco.org/). Specifically, it is found in the following drop down menu sequence: Education>Participation>Distribution of Enrollment>Distribution of Enrollment by Programme Orientation.

Once here, the following 6 sheets were used: Percentage of (male/female/total) students in (upper/lower) secondary education enrolled in vocational programmes.

Items of Note:

  1. As of this writing (May 2016), there was no data for 2015 for the LowerVoc series, only 1999-2014. However, there was 2015 data  for the UpperVoc series.

Specifically, it is found in the following drop down menu sequence: Education>Financial Resources>Government Expenditure per Student>Government Expenditure per Student as Percentage of GDP per capita. 

Once here, the following 5 sheets were used: Government expenditure per (primary/secondary/lower seconday/upper seconday/tertiary) student as percentage of GDP per capita.
