Use IFs (Download): Bilateral

The Bilateral Specialized Display can be accessed from the Main Menu; click Display, Specialized Display, the Bilateral History and Forecast. This specialized display is only available in Bilateral versions of the model. Use this display to explore bilateral variables historical data and forecasts for any dyad of countries covered by IFs. For example, explore what percent of China's trade is with Serbia, or explore migration flows between Mexico and Brazil.

Explore the bilateral data and relationships of dyads in IFs using the options and features available in this display.

  • Continue: Go back to the previous menu or to the Main Menu of IFs.
  • Series Type: Choose between the following series types; the current selection will have checkmark next to it.
    • Dyadic: Historical dyadic variables.
    • Monadic for Actor: Historical monadic variables for the chosen actor. This is the same set of variables that are available in the non-bilateral version of IFs.
    • Monadic for Partner: Historical monadic variables for the chosen partner. This is the same set of variables that are available in the non-bilateral version of IFs.
    • Saved Formulas: Formulas created and saved using the Computation feature are housed here. The DYADICMILSTOCK formula is loaded by default and is a formula of imports and exports of arms as a stock, representing cumulative arms trade of a dyad. When a formula is added to the Selected Series table three new menu options appear: Save Formula, Rename Formula, Edit Formula, Edit Gravity.
    • Forecast: Forecasted dyadic variables. Scenario display option appears once clicked.
    • Forecast with Historical Analog: Forecasted dyadic variables along with their historical analogs if available. Scenario display option appears once clicked.

Other temporary menu bar options:

  • Save Table: Save the last made table. This option is only available when a table is generated using Table and Continue is clicked to open the original Bilateral screen.
    • Save to File: Download a file of the table in IFs default format.
    • Save to Clipboard: Save the table to clipboard on device, to paste elsewhere.
    • Save to Transpose: Download a file of the table transposed form IFs default format.
    • Save in Panel Format: Download a file of the table in panel format where each row is a unique value.
  • Save Formula: Save a new Formula created using the Computation option from the Selected Series table to Saved Formulas.
  • Rename Formula: Change the name of a formula using the text box that appears when clicked; click OK to rename or X to cancel.
  • Edit Formula: Edit a selected formula following the same process as the Computations feature from Self-Managed Displays.
  • Edit Gravity: ??

Other display options:

  • Historical Series: Select a desired variable then click Select Current.
  • Actor and Partner: Select the desired countries, groups, decomposed groups, or geography-lists to be actor and partner in a dyad, then click Add Dyad.
  • Geography Options: Choose to display Countries, Groups, Decomposed Groups, or Geography Lists.
  • Select Series: This box lists the current series or variables selected to explore. To remove one series click it in the box so it is highlighted then click Remove Selected(s).
  • Select Dyads: This box lists the current dyads selected to explore. To remove one dyad click it in the box, or click Remove All to clear the box.
  • Search: Click to open search page to look for certain variables or variable lists.
  • Clear: Clears the Select Series box.
  • Computation: Use to create a new formula following the same process as the Computations feature from Self-Managed Displays.
  • Gravity: ??
  • Table: Create a table based on the selections in the Select Dyads and Select Series boxes.
  • Line: Create a line graph based on the selections in the Select Dyads and Select Series boxes.
