The Development Goals specialized display options, explore how far the world and countries are from attaining the Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 goals adopted by all United Nations Member states in 2015, that focus on collaboration between countries toward better sustainable development. Each goal has several targets that help to quantify their attainment. Each of the display options described below can help to assess SDG targets over time and explore their potential for attainment in the future.

SDG Overview Table

The SDG Overview Table display can be found from the Main Menu: choose the Display option, the Specialized Display sub-option, and then the SDG Overview Table sub-sub-option.

This display shows a table of the SDGs and their targets that IFs has corresponding variables to measure. This table displays forecasts and historical data on SDG targets for a chosen country and scenario. The table has five columns: the names of indicators that correspond with a certain target and SDG, the most recent year of historical data, forecast for the chosen year and reference scenario, forecast for the chosen intervention scenario, and if available the target value. When a target value is available the forecast columns will be filled red if the forecast is not reaching the target, and green if it is reaching the target.

An example of the SDG Overview Table display for Kenya with the year 2040 and goal 1 selected.

There are several options and features to adjust and explore the display that can be found in the menu bar or the display field options at the top of the screen:

  • Continue: Go back to the previous menu or to the Main Menu of IFs.
  • Using Groups or Using Countries/Regions: Click Switch to change between displaying groups or countries and regions. If groups are currently selected then Using Groups will be displayed on the tool bar and vice versa.
  • Use History Only Indicators or Back to Forecasted Indicators: Click Switch2 to change between only displaying the most recent historical data that IFs has with no forecasts or to displaying forecast and all the variables with data. If forecasts are currently displayed then Use History Only Indicators will be displayed on the tool bar and vice versa.
  • Help: Open the corresponding page in the Pardee Wiki for the current feature or display.

Display Option Fields:

  • Groups or Countries or Regions: Choose the desired country or region, or group form the drop down.
  • Select Year: Choose the desired year to display from the drop down.
  • Select Reference Scenario: Choose the desired saved scenario to display from the drop down.
  • Select Intervention Scenario: Choose the desired saved scenario to display from the drop down.
  • Goal: Choose the desired SDG from the drop down.

SDG Graph

The SDG Graph display can be found from the Main Menu: choose the Display option, the Specialized Display sub-option, and then the SDG Graph sub-sub-option.

This display shows the history and forecast of an IFs variable that corresponds with the chosen SDG goal and target for a given country and scenario. Along with this forecast, the graph also shows the target value if available.

An example of the SDG Graph display for Kenya with goal 1 and target 1.1 chosen.

There are several options and features to adjust and explore the graph that can be found in the menu bar or the display field options:

  • Continue: Go back to the previous menu or to the Main Menu of IFs.
  • Global Picture: Click Situation Map to open a display map comparing all countries for the chosen goal and target.
  • Causality: Open a display of the drivers of the currently displayed variable. This display shows what variables drive the currently displayed variable in the IFs model.
  • Switch:
    • Use Groups or Use Countries: Change between displaying groups or countries and regions. If groups are currently selected then Use Countries will be displayed on the tool bar and vice versa.
    • Compare: Compare two countries or groups. First Select the desired countries or groups; one at the drop down at the top of the screen and and the other at the drop down below the graph. Then click Compare.
  • Display Options:
    • Earliest Year to Display: Select the desired earliest year to display on the graph from the drop down that appears.
    • Latest Year to Display: Select the desired latest year to display on the graph from the drop down that appears.
    • Not filling holes in group data or Using estimation to fill holes in group data: Click this to switch between either using estimation techniques to fill in missing data for countries in the selected group or not filling in data at all. Not filing holes in group data is displayed if the display is not using estimations to fill in missing data and vice versa.
    • Using Cross-Sectionally enhanced Longitudinal Regression to fill holes: Click to use this estimation technique.
    • Estimation with Regression: Hover over to choose the desired regression technique from the drop down. This regression is used to estimate the base year and most recent year when the chosen country or group does not have data available. The current technique will have a check mark next to in the drop down.
    • Show Regression Values: Show the regression line that is used to estimate the base year and most recent year when the chosen country or group does not have data available.
  • Edit Target: Click Edit to manually set the target year and value.
  • About SDG:
    • Goals: Open a page that provides more detailed information about the SDGs.
    • Explain: Open a page that explains the estimation process for missing data, and how IFs sets target values based upon the SDG targets.
  • Help: Open the corresponding page in the Pardee Wiki with the current feature or display being used.

Display Option Fields; after each selection the graph will automatically refresh and reflect the change:

  • Goal drop down: Select desired goal.
  • Target drop down: Select the desired target.
  • Indicator drop down: Select the desired indicator.
  • Country or Group drop down (top of screen): Select the desired country or group.
  • Scenario drop down: Select the desired scenario.
  • Country or Group drop down (bottom of screen): Select the desired country or group prior to using the Compare option.
  • Display: Select Chart or Data to change the display format between a graph or table.

Poverty Level Display

The Poverty Level Display can be found from the Main Menu: choose the Display option, the Specialized Display sub-option, and then the Poverty Level Display sub-sub-option.

This display feature is useful for generating and displaying forecasts of populations who live under a certain monetary constraint, between two chosen income levels, or the income of a chosen percentile within a geographically bound region. Change selections and the display option fields then choose to display the generated forecasts as either a table, line graph, or bar graph.

An example of the Poverty Level Display.
